ALPHABET SOUP: THEATER FROM QUEER VOICES
Whim’s flagship program, Alphabet Soup: Theater from Queer Voices is a short play showcase featuring the work of LGBTQ+ playwrights in the Kansas City region. The first production was part of the 2015 KC Fringe Festival. Based on the success of the production and recognizing the continuing need to have queer voices on stage, we made the show a yearly stand-alone production.
We took a hiatus in 2017 to implement a new strategy for the festival. Scripts are now selected based on merit and potential. The selected playwrights participate in private workshops facilitated by Kevin King, Whim’s Producing Artistic Director. This allows the plays to develop and builds a community among the writers. The workshops have given production opportunities to people who had never had a production before. In fact, some of the selected playwrights had never written a play prior to being involved in Soup.
